building a computer

If I were to be trying to upgrade a computer to perform better, would a good model to start with be 'Dell XPS 8500'? I was originally aiming to get an Alienware Aurora computer until I did further research and figured I make the same level of computer myself, and not have to 'pay for the name' and I was told that 'Dell XPS' models were a good start.

Thoughts anyone?
